"The Second Piano Sonata evokes a nocturnal landscape with spacious atmospheric textures creating a haunting mood, which is occasionally disrupted but works towards a radiant B major ending. Korevaar understands these interactions perfectly, savours the melancholy melodies - probably Liebermann's most distinctive trait - and delivers the rapid passages with aplomb. The 'Bruckner Variations' are based on one of the two little-known Aequali for three trombones written in 1847 but there is more of Liebermann's elusive temperament in the 'Gargoyles'. 'The Album for the Young' is lighthearted with the emphasis on reflective pieces." - Gramophone
"Liebermann's music is unmistakably evocative of any number of past composers - Schumann, Alkan, Scriabin, Satie, Barber, early Copland, and Bartók being prime candidates - yet it manages somehow to escape being overtly or blatantly derivative. It is modern, yet rooted somewhere in the early 20th-century universe of extended tonal harmony and in the Classical forms of sonata and variations. I suppose this is another way of saying that Liebermann's music is accessible and falls graciously on the ear, which seems to be a characteristic of much post-modernist music, especially American, being written these days. And grateful for it I be. This is Volume 2 of Liebermann's solo piano works, which now completes all of the solo piano music written before 2001. David Korevaar is an accomplished pianist, and he enjoys a close relationship with the composer, so I have to assume the performances here are authoritative. I thoroughly enjoyed this CD, and recommend it without reservation." - Fanfare |
