"In the middle of the 19th century, concertgoers in Paris would rather hear music by German composers than they would their own. Composer Camille Saint-Saëns recalled ruefully, 'If a program showed that the composer was French, and still living, audiences would stay away in droves!' To help remedy the situation, Saint-Saëns founded the Société Nationale de Musique in 1875. Two of the happy results of this new recognition of French music are to be heard on this Centaur CD: the Piano Quartets by Saint-Saëns (in B-flat major) and his younger contemporary Vincent d'Indy (in A minor). They are optimally performed by the Prometheus Piano Quartet... All are top-rate musicians, as they must be to convey the greatness of these neglected masterworks."
